A second team of bag-packers went to Morrisons on Thursday 17th December, making the total across this and other fundraising in College, £783.59 for Ashgate Hospice - almost at our target of £1,000.

The whole College took part in the Remembrance Service today, commemorating soldiers and service personnel who had lost their lives in the First World War and the conflicts since.

Our first victory of the year! Well done to the Inclusion Team, ranked 5th best in Derbyshire 2015 and winners of the Chesterfield SEN Sports Team of the Year.

Our first night last night and the performers were amazing.  Costumes and set looked incredible.  All the hard work paid off.
Following two rehearsals to the local primary school children and to our own students as part of their achievement rewards, our students performed Cinderella last night to a Hall of cheering family and friends and the local community.  Well done to everyone involved - three more nights to go!!

Pictures from our Design and Technology workshops; enthusiasm going through the roof this term!

Our new Wednesday Club - Bash It and Bodge It - for Years 7, 8 and 9 provides an opportunity to get creative in metal working, bench and machine skills on small projects including team work to restore a Lister petrol engine.

Plus, there's the new 3D printer which you will see from the photos our students are designing and making their own creations.

A fantastic achievement last week - our Year 7 Girls Football Team were crowned Chesterfield Champions competing in the area finals against five other schools - scoring 9 goals and conceding none.
Well done to Lataya, Kristie (missing from picture), Charlotte, Megan, Tia, Courtney, Aimee, Jody.

On the run up to the Christmas festive period Springwell’s Arts Club were asked if they would produce some art work for the Rotary Club of Bolsover.  The brief was to make a 12 foot long frieze depicting Santa’s Christmas Eve journey delivering presents around the world.  The art work was then going to be attached to Santa’s sleigh.  They welcomed the opportunity to showcase their skills, and it took around 4 weeks to complete.

It was then attached to Santa’s sleigh in time for the Rotary Club take the sleigh on its annual journey in and around the Chesterfield area to raise funds.  The Arts Club visited the display at the Tesco Extra store on Friday 11th December to see their work in place.   They also met a very special festive guest - Father Christmas himself.  Members of the Arts Club pictured are : Kirk, Elouise, Nathaniel, Declan, Ben, Ashley and Jodie.

In preparation for the college's involvement in Safer Internet Day on 9th February, our SLT have been giving their top tips for keeping safe. Lots more information to come as our Anti-Bullying Co-ordinator and her Ambassadors lead on this awareness raising day across the college.

Retaining their North Derbyshire Championship Title this month, Springwell took control of the School Sports Partnerships Indoor Rowing competition on 8th February.  Winning the KS3 Boys, KS4 Boys and KS4 Girls, KS3 and KS4 Mixed Team Relay and coming second in the KS3 Girls they were outstanding, and took the KS3 and KS4 Overall awards, being crowned for the second year as Top School in North Derbyshire.  Massive well done to all the students and to the coaches.

Following a successful refresh of our ICT equipment in October 2015, the Governing Body agreed to recycle the existing stock of laptops amongst our college community. All students were given the opportunity to purchase the original laptops that had been replaced, for use at home. Laptops were sold at a greatly reduced price (less than 10% of RRP) and reduced even further for our Pupil Premium students. This initiative has allowed more students to have access to ICT when not in college and therefore be able to access the array of online education resources available from ourselves and third parties as well as having technology available to complete homework and coursework electronically.

In total 265 laptops were sold to students, 160 of these to Pupil Premium students. In addition to supporting our own students we also offered a number of netbooks to our feeder primaries to purchase. Staveley Junior School, Henry Bradley Infant and Barrow Hill Primary School took advantage of the opportunity, receiving 82 netbooks housed in 3 charging trollies between them.

The funding raised from this initiative will be reinvested into future resources to ensure that Springwell Community College remains at the forefront of ICT advances and our students continue to have excellent access to up-to-date facilities.

Congratulations to Grace in Year 7 who has been elected to the Derbyshire Youth Council, and to Sophie in Year 10 a very graceful second place who has the opportunity to join the Chesterfield Youth Forum.  Both enjoyed the evening at County Hall yesterday.

Get work, get paid, get qualified, get a head start !  14-18 March 2016 saw Springwell celebrating National Apprenticeships Week 2016. Mrs Clarke (Careers Coordinator for Springwell) organised a mini Post 16 event.  Employers and apprenticeship providers were invited to come along to talk to students about their future career paths and to highlight the details of various apprenticeship schemes.

We would like to thank representatives from the following organisations who gave up their time to share their expertise with our students:  DART (Training Land-Based Industries); DNCC (Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce); NLT Training; The Army; Chesterfield College – Learning Unlimited; YMCA; Apprenticeship Team.

All of the providers commented about our students. They were extremely impressed with their confidence and level of questioning. All the providers are now looking forward to attending the main Post 16 event that we run annually in October.
